Refrigerant R22 Phase Out – Your Options Explained

Used widely in refrigeration and air conditioning systems R22 refrigerant is being phased out over the next few years.  With the initial deadline on the 1st of January 2010 fast approaching, we wanted to let you know that you still have options.

Recycled stocks of R22 will still be available for some time and several environmentally friendly alternatives are available in the market that could help to reduce ongoing running costs.

“There has been a lot of focus on the January deadline, but this is simply when no new stocks of R22 will be available. We wanted our customers to know that they have a number of ways of keeping old equipment functioning if it is in reasonable condition,” says Gavin Hastings, Chairman of Aircon Services.

If you have existing systems using R22 refrigerant there is no reason to stop using them and recycled stock is likely to be available until 2015 when it can then no longer be used. It will only be an issue prior to this date if you require work to the refrigeration system, involving the refrigerant, but even then we can reclaim refrigerant and reuse it.  Alternatively, new drop in refrigerants are also available, but they do contain Hydrofluorocarbons and need to be handled by somebody with specialist engineering skills.

For those who are likely to move premises or are planning a refit anyway this phasing out R22 Refrigerant could be tied in to existing plans.

“There is time for people to tackle this phase out in a controlled and cost effective way and we want people to know that we have the right skills, knowledge and experience to give customers best advice,” says Gavin.
