EU-wide consultation looks to accelerate heat pump use

One consideration in the conclusion is a call for ‘accessible financing’ to encourage the increased installation of heat pumps both in individual properties as well as for district heating solutions. One major area for funding would be in the case of lower oncome households and individuals at risk of fuel poverty.

They are also calling for firm commitments to be introduced that would end the installation of standalone fossil fuel heating systems and phase out the installation of standalone boilers from 2029

The objective to install at least 10 million additional heat pumps by 2027

Although this is an EU intitive it is expected to be adopted by Britain – this in light of The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee who has published a letter describing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) that provides households with grants to install heat pumps as ‘seriously failing

In 2021, less than 2% of UK homes had low-carbon heating systems. Around 50,000 heat pumps were installed in the UK that year. The government is aiming for a target of 600,000 installations a year

Other issues included
There are currently very few certified heat pump installers compared to gas boiler fitters.
A lack of consumer advice means people are unfamiliar with heat pump technologies, and the installation process is regarded as overly complex.
Issues with how Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) categorise the efficiency of heat pumps, and concerns that inaccurate EPCs may disqualify households that should be eligible.
Heat pump manufacturers and installers are not expanding at the rate needed to meet the target of 600,000 installations per year.

Air source heat pumps: propane as an ecological solution

Different refrigerants with different classifications are used according to the requirements of the unit. As a rule, the designation starts with an R for “refrigerant”, followed by a combination of numbers that provides information about the molecular composition of the refrigerant. All types of refrigerants are labelled with a GWP value. GWP stands for Global Warming Potential and indicates the greenhouse potential compared to CO2. That is why people often talk about the CO2 equivalent in this context and the impact that air source heat pumps or air conditioning can have.

Propane – the natural, climate-friendly refrigerant for air source heat pumps
Propane is considered to be one of the most ecologically compatible refrigerants. It is a hydrocarbon and is known in the refrigeration industry as the natural refrigerant R290. Although propane is not a new development, as it has been used in a whole range of units over recent decades. its use as a refrigerant is on the rise again as a result of the current focus on climate protection. What sets propane apart is that it combines excellent thermodynamic properties with a low GWP value of just 3 which means that your air source heating installation will be cleaner than ever.

In other words, 1 kg of propane is equivalent to only 3 kg of CO2. Therefore, this refrigerant does not contribute directly to the greenhouse effect. Air Con services are harnessing these properties to use and install heat pumps even more environmentally compatible and future-proof, we take our obligations to a safer and cleaner environment seriously.

Health Benefits of Installing Air Conditioning

There are a number of health benefits that air conditioning can help with from filtration to allergy control, cleaning and dehumidifying properties, all of which can all have a positive effect on your health. Most people are simply just unaware of the health benefits of installing air conditioning. Whilst air conditioning is most commonly associated with keeping you cool during summer months, did you know that units can heat, as well at cool?

Heat exhaustion itself can seriously impact the health of certain individuals and groups. This is particularly true for those with disabilities and homebound, people who work from home, or those owning dogs and cats as pets, for example. People who suffer from asthma can benefit from living in an air-conditioned environment, as filters in the units help remove dust, pollutants and mites.

Do you Suffer from Allergies?

Air conditioning can help those who regularly suffer from allergies. The filtration system will filter out pollen, pet hair and other contaminants that might otherwise get into your home. Keeping windows closed is one way of stopping pollen entering the house, but this is not ideal on very hot days when room will become unbearably hot.

With an internal solution and fitting air conditioning, you can keep your home cool and comfortable, as well as clean the air at the same time.

Pollution and odours

City living means you are likely to be exposed to a number of fumes or pollutants on a daily basis. Heavy traffic, public transport and commercial shops and premises, can all lead to causing pollutants. These mentioned pollutants can have a harmful effect on your health, but in having an air conditioner installed, you can at least close your windows when at home. This will allow the filtration system to ensure the air you are breathing throughout the night is pure and free from radicals.

Whilst this is difficult to prevent on a day-to-day level when you are out and about around town, at least by having air conditioning fitting within your home you can prevent yourself being exposed to bad odours, pollution, dust and heat when back at home and during the night.

Keeping a Consistent Temperature

Living in uncomfortable temperatures can also have an impact on your health. Air conditioners allows you to ensure a consistently comfortable temperature in your home, workplace or even in a single space (ie home office, conservatory, gym, etc). Experiencing severe heat or severe cold can use up energy quickly, which in turn can impact your immune system, leading to unnecessary fatigue or heat exhaustion. By maintaining consistent body temperature you’ll give your body a better chance at fighting off infections and place less strain on your immune system.

Humidity in the Home

We’ve all seen the black mould spores and effects that occur on window frames or the corners of a room when the property is poorly ventilated. Showering, kettles, air drying clothes and over population, of a property can all lead to excess moisture and if the house is not property ventilated this is going to cause humidity.

Properties with high humidity levels will bring with it, harmful bacteria and other microorganisms harmful to health. You are probably aware that high humidity in the home can cause many of these issues, which can not only damage your health but your property as well, but likewise there are also negative health issues associated with low humidity levels that can include the production of dry air which in turn causes skin problems and affect breathing and sinuses.

How Can Air Conditioning Improve Sleep?

Another key benefit of air conditioning, is how it can improve your sleep. Many people struggle to sleep due to temperature fluctuations at night. You may go to bed at a perfectly comfortable temperature but wake up in the middle of the night sweating (or too cold). By having an air conditioning system installed in your bedroom will allow you to keep the room at a consistent temperature, allowing for a better night’s sleep.

Air conditioning is also ideal if you have a ground floor flat or bungalow, where you may not wish to leave windows open at night for security measures and noise pollution.

An air conditioning system is one of the most reliable ways to maintain a perfect humidity level in the home.

Solar Cool Air Conditioning Installation

Aircon Services has just completed their first Solar Cool installation for the Engineering Department Oxford University on the Begbroke Science Park.

Solar Cool Air Condition Unit in Oxford

The installation comprised a Mini VRF system with three indoor cassette units and the solar panel mounted adjacent to the condensing unit.

Solar Cool uses an exclusive patented process, based around the Ideal Gas Law, situated between the Compressor and Condenser. Utilising the free available energy from the sun to heat the refrigerant & subsequently reducing the workload of the compressor/s, thermo dynamics.

As the free energy from the sun heats the refrigerant, it is provided with thermal energy, this in turn raises the internal energy (the sum of all microscopic kinetic and potential energy of the molecules). The molecules now move with a higher value of kinetic energy, which simply implies each molecule moves with a higher velocity than before.

Now the molecules collide with one another and rebound with an increased energy, moreover intermolecular forces weaken and the molecules space out further, which means an increase in gaseous volume, and therefore a naturally increased volume flow, resulting in an improved Delta T in the condenser, subsequently producing the unequalled cooling and heating process of solar thermal.

Oxford University Air Conditioning Unit InstallationIn heating mode the system works in almost the same way, but now the flow changes compared to the cooling mode. The additional free heating of the refrigerant in the solar panel allows the compressor to reduce it’s load and therefore it’s power consumption.

Dependant on sun levels, COP figures (heating capacity vs power consumption) of over 8 are possible! Again the more the sun shines, the more the solar panel takes over the compressing of the gas and the more power is saved, as the compressor now acts mainly as a pump providing the necessary cycle flow.

Due to the ultra UV absorbent design and glass vacuum tubing, the ambient external temperature has little if any impact on the temperature of the gas. The only natural element driving this positive process is the free energy provided by the sun’s rays

It has been proven to reduce annual energy consumption by up to 60%, if you would like to know more about Solar Cool or you would like to reduce your energy consumption on your next air conditioning installation call now! 0800 9989135.

Server Room Air Conditioning In Berkshire

Aircon Services were recently approached to find a more efficient cooling solution for the Main Data Room at ‘Travelport’ Head Office, Langley, Berkshire.

Their data room was being cooled using 3No. Liebert L99UA down flow close control computer room units and their corresponding Leibert HBE99 air cooled condensing units offering a combined Sensible cooling capacity of 255kW spread over 6No refrigerant circuits. The condensing units were located within a purpose built compound at ground level but across a service road. With the interconnecting refrigeration pipe work running through a trench below this service road. Over time the condensing units had become badly corroded resulting in inefficiency through lack of heat transfer. A new solution was required.

Aircon Services replaces the last R22 water chiller on the Oxford University Campus

Aircon Services has replaced the last R22 water chiller on the Oxford University Campus with a Daikin air cooled EWAQ150DAYN, due to the position of the unit we had to employ the services of a specialist lifting company and a mobile tower crane, the old unit was safely lifted from its base and the new Daikin unit installed.

The pipe work was altered to suit the new layout and welded in situ using our own directly employed pipe fitters, the chiller was de-commissioned on a Friday and up and running by the following Tuesday.
